This is a very rare, complete 1st edition set of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, published by P F Collier and Sons, New York. The earliest known copy of this wonderful set dates to 1904, but copies are suspected to have originated in 1903. These books form part of the core materials of the C. Frederick Kittle Collection of Doyleana at the Newberry Library. These are contemporary blind-stamped dark grey cloth binding volumes and each one has Steele's portrait of Sherlock Holmes smoking a pipe, stamped in black and gold, and signed by the engraver DD in the upper boardVol.

I, "A study in scarlet and Other Stories", has frontispiece black and orange illustration portrait of of Sherlock Holmes standing, smoking a pipe Vol. II, has black and orange illustration frontispiece of Holmes sitting on the ground with a contemplative look on his face, again smoking a pipe. III, has frontispiece photographic portrait of Conan Doyle, inscribed "Yours as of yore, Arthur Conan Doyle". Included in volume 1 of this set is an introduction by Dr. Harold Emory Jones titled the Original of Sherlock Holmes. These books are in very good to near fine condition with minimal defects to include a couple discoloration spots on the covers, minor wear to the cloth corners, all text, pages and artwork intact.

Binding is tight, pages are crisp. This set came from a private Library collection and the previous owner's name, J. Kilbourn, is neatly written on the opening page of 2 of the 3 volumes each in black Ink.

Very minimal foxing to exterior edge of pages, no foxing on page face. These books do not have a date anywhere in all three volumes and are believed to be the among oldest of these sets in existence. Not to mention, even the newer editions available are almost NEVER in this fine of condition after 120 years.
