Vintage Ashton & Rietz Mah Jong Set 152 Tiles, 4 Wood Racks, Very Rare 1920s

  

This offer is for an Ashton & Reitz black tile Mah Jong (Mah Jongg, Mahjongg) set from the 1920s with 152 tiles. This set original came with 144 tiles - we added 8 matching tiles from another identical set for Jokers, so it can be played American style. There fewer than 10 sets known to exist, making it very rare and these other sets do not necessarily have extra tiles for Jokers. The tiles measure approximately 1 3/8 inch (L) x 27/32 inch (W) x 3/8 inch (T). We have been told that these tiles are probably made from clay or ebony, but cannot confirm this.

The paint on the tiles is in very good to excellent condition. The 152 tile set includes: 36 crak tiles (1-9), 36 dot tiles (1-9), 36 bam tiles (1-9), 16 wind tiles (N, E, W, S), 12 Dragon tiles (red, green, white), 8 flower tiles, and 8 matching tiles stickered as Jokers. The flower tiles are pared up such that when placed next to each other the two tiles in each pair create a single picture. Considering its age, the cardboard box is in excellent condition and contains all appropriate parts. The design on the top cover is in great condition.

The smaller trays contain four different betting sticks of unknown composition in perfect condition, a wind indicator plastic container with two sets of wind indicators (one set is complete, one set has to wests and no east though the container is marked as an east), and a pair of period dice. The set includes four period appropriate wood racks - one in red for East and three in black for the other position. The racks are in excellent condition and come with Chinese scoring tables on the bottom of the racks the scoring tables are in very good conition with some imperfections.
