A special set #4109WS was created in 1946 with radio receivers installed in each car. The Lionel Set was called the "Electronic Set". This set featured remote coupling, uncoupling and operation of the cars with ECU Control Transmitter with 10 colored buttons. Vacuum Tubes were used as the receivers to facilitate the uncoupling and operation without the use of a track section.
A Special ECU Controller with 10 buttons was required. The receivers in each car responded to a specific button that was pressed. The Tender had two receivers mounted in it; each turned to respond to a different frequency. One, when it received would send a jolt of power to the E-unit to cycle it.
The other would activated the Whistle for as long as the button was held down. The Receiver in the cars would activate the couplers.
